During major sporting events (such as the World Cup) we seem to constantly encounter articles discussing how employers should treat employees during such events.

We understand there is a lot of excitement around major sporting tournaments (Olympics, Wimbledon, Rugby World Cup etc) but why is there a need to have special or different arrangements for leave or working hours during these times?

The simple answer is, there isn’t!

Apply your time and attendance rules fairly and consistently all year round, don’t move the goal posts no matter who’s playing.

Cutting through the scaremongering

The recent glut of ‘managing staff absence during ….(insert major sporting event)’ type articles got us thinking about other HR-related ‘non-issues’ that seem to have been blown out of all proportion.

The HR press seems to be fuelled by pessimists or those who have a vested interest in scaremongering, particularly amongst SME’s who often don’t have the knowledge or resources within the business to deal with what often seems to be a never ending torrent of new regulations aimed at making business more difficult.

Despite having knowledge of the latest new regulations, the authors of these articles provide little in the way of real life practical advice on how you should deal with the changes, or in fact whether you need to do anything at all.

One such example of this is the change in the extension to all employees of the right to apply for flexible working.  If you are struggling to keep up with the updates, don’t panic. We’re always on hand with pragmatic advice and a cool head. Just get in touch.
